| How do I schedule an inspection? The first step to answering this question is to identify the location and type of inspection that is required. The FMO performs three main types of inspections/appointments: Fire Prevention Code Permit Inspections These inspections, also often known as operational or annual inspections, are conducted and tracked on a permit basis. The Fire Prevention Code requires certain facilities, operations and hazards to obtain a permit and there is an inspection associated with these permits. See the FAQ "Do I need a permit and what type might I need?" for more information. Once a Fire Prevention Code Permit application is received, the assigned Fire Marshal will coordinate an onsite inspection within a few weeks - no scheduling by the applicant is required. Fire Prevention Code Complaint Inspections These inspections, also known as complaint inspections, are conducted on a case-by-case basis. When a complaint is received it is immediately assigned to the appropriate Fire Marshal to investigate and take further action if necessary. These inspections do not usually require scheduling by the complainant. Other Fire Inspections/Appointments If an inspection is requested that does not fit into either the permit or complaint category, an appointment may be scheduled with the FMO to talk with or meet with a Fire Marshal. Please contact the FMO at 540-658-7200 to schedule an appointment. Please note: the Fire Marshal's Office NO LONGER conducts NEW CONSTRUCTION fire inspections! Inspections for construction permits, including for fire protection or life safety systems, are coordinated and completed by the Department of Code Administration.
