LIFE SAVING TIPS WHEN USING ALTERNATE POWER & HEATING DEVICES

The Stafford County Fire and Rescue Departments urgently reminds the community that improper use of space heaters, generators and other non-traditional heating devices is hazardous, and may prove deadly.
Throughout the current winter storm, Stafford County alone has seen residential power outages ranging from several hundred to thousands at any given time. While utility crews are working around the clock to restore power, the community is urged to not let their guards down, and do not veer from safe practices.
There have been several recent instances where unsuspecting residents have improperly used generators and alternate heat sources, causing "near miss" situations regarding fire or life safety.
If using a generator for power –
• It MUST be stationed outdoors, away from the home where fumes cannot be drawn back into the residence. • It MUST NOT be used in a basement, garage or area near open doors, windows or intake vents. • DO NOT overload the capacity of the generator with accessories and appliances.
When using alternate heat sources –
• Follow all manufacturers' instructions for use and care. • Burn only seasoned, dry hardwoods in fireplaces and woodstoves • Ensure flues and vent pipes are free from built up or drifted snow and ice. • NEVER USE A GAS GRILL FOR THE PURPOSE OF HEATING AN INDOOR (enclosed) AREA!
All equipment and appliances that burn a fossil fuel (wood, gas, oil, pellets) also emit CO, or carbon monoxide. This gas is colorless and odorless, and robs the home of oxygen without warning. It is often called the silent killer. Do not burn a fossil fuel without ensuring adequate ventilation, and install a CO Alarm and maintain the battery.
